Meet My Grandma Couches (All Four of Them!)

The "I Love My Vintage Pattern" Couch

   The Story:
This is the newest couch to the collection. We actually bought it last week when we redecorated our family room! We didn't have any great seating for the room so I knew exactly what we needed. This awesome couch. They don't make couches like this anymore (some people might argue that they don't on purpose). What do I love about it? There are clean, tailored lines, bright happy colors, and a playful pattern. Another plus? We didn't spend a lot on it so if it gets really beat up in what is going to be the kid's playroom then who cares?!
   The Source:
We found this couch on Craigslist and purchased it for $40. I negotiated them down from $50. We actually bought it from a man who was selling his recently deceased mother-in-law's furniture...in other words, he was selling her grandma couch. She was the only owner and barely used it at all! Now it has a new place to call home and we are already enjoying it a lot. I think every family member including three dogs has already taken a nap on it, too!
   Long Term Plan:
Keep it! As I mentioned before, this couch resides in our family room which will also double as a play room. I guess the only reason that we would replace it would be if it became ultra hideous from the kiddos wrecking havoc. We shall see!

The "This Really is My Grandma's" Couch

The Story:
This beauty was actually my Great Grandmothers! How gorgeous is it? When I was in high school this resided in my bedroom at home but I was a little sad that it couldn't journey with me to college. It lived at my parent's house throughout my college years but made the journey back to me once Josh and I purchased our house! I am so thankful! This couch's biggest fan happens to be Javi, our chihuahua. He likes to make this windowed area his look out point for all things. It's a riot.

Family heirloom :).
   Long Term Plan:
Keep it forever. Maybe get it reupholstered in a few years to look something like this.

Check out the other two couches after the jump!

The "Got A Great Deal On It" Couch

   The Story:
This couch had a somewhat humorous entrance into our little family. This one was also found on Craigslist and was listed with another couch. When we went to pick it up I thought I had specified that I wanted the other couch. Somewhere our wires did not cross and we ended up taking home this one. But you know what? It didn't matter too much. It still fits into our aesthetic in the living room. It is also tall enough that Javi can jam his tennis balls underneath and play "tag".

Craigslist! From a nice family is East Grand Rapids for $30. Thanks, folks.
   Long Term Plan:
Replace it! I am thinking that we will replace this with a new, tailored couch that can also double as a guest bed (aka pull-out). Since we plan on having one million children, odds are that we will not be able to have a guest room forever and hopefully this will help when accommodating guests! I've got my eye on this one, this one, and this one! Which do you like best? Luckily I do not have to make my decision for a while.

The "Super Functional, Dashing Daybed"
   The Story:
We really wanted another way to accomodate more guests and this 1950's daybed was such a great find. There is a frame that pulls out from underneath similar to a trundle bed, then you slide the top cushion onto the frame and poof! You have a queen-sized sleeping area.
   The Source:
We bought it from Lost & Found (for around $100), a local Grand Rapids antique shop that is curated with awesome  pieces! We have also bought the cart in our downstair's bathroom and the teal chair in Asa's room from there!
   Long Term Plan:
I am still not sure about this one! I do not think this will stay with us once we have baby #2 but we shall wait and see?

Do you have any quirky furniture at your house?

  1. This is so amazing! I can't believe you have two yellow couches that are both so awesome - and one a family heirloom! The fabric on the new one in the family room is so fun, I want to find something like it. And I love that piece of art centered above it - what are the details on that? Such great colors going on in that room, love your style!

  2. Hi Amberly! What a fun name you have! I am so glad that you like the post :), as you can tell I love my gma couches, esp the heirloom one. The art piece above the couch is from an art competition name ArtPrize that is put on annually in Grand Rapids, MI, where I live. That was the poster from the very first year they had it. You should look up the competition on google, it is pretty rad and a huge deal here! Thanks again for reading and your comment!
